Football – Premier League Preview

Staff Writer - 1 Feb 2010

The next installment of Premier League fixtures has been dubbed the ‘Derby Weekend’ which sees two of the country’s biggest matches starting with Liverpool v Everton on Saturday lunchtime.

But the match most spread bettors will be talking about is Chelsea v Arsenal on Sunday afternoon. Arsene Wenger will demand more from his side after their home defeat to Manchester United, and those looking to buy the team’s win index against Chelsea will be relying on a far better defensive showing.

Buyers of Chelsea’s supremacy spread will still have happy memories of the 3-0 triumph at the Emirates in November while a concern for spread punters opposing Chelsea will be that the Blues have now won their last three matches against Arsenal in all competitions. However, spread sellers of Chelsea’s supremacy will be quick to point out that Arsenal did claim a victory in their last league match at Stamford Bridge.

Since Carlo Ancelotti’s arrival in South West London, his side have yet to taste defeat at home and have only drawn once – winning their other eleven matches.

The Blues are the top home goal-scorers in the league with 37 goals, while Arsenal are joint top scorers away from the Emirates with 25. Spread bettors looking to buy total goals will be further pleased to note that Chelsea have scored an impressive 17 goals in their previous four home matches in all competitions. Spread buyers can also take plenty of encouragement that the last five meetings between Arsenal and Chelsea have all seen at least three goals.

The Sporting Index traders will take into account the importance of Sunday’s match before setting their bookings spread market. The last few meetings between the sides have not seen a great deal of card action, with four handed out last time. Spread buyers may be surprised that the three previous meetings have only accumulated a total of seventy points on the bookings index.

Both Merseyside teams have shown vast improvement in the last few weeks and Saturday’s match will have spread bettors keenly debating which way this one will go. Buyers of Liverpool’s supremacy spread will be pleased to know that Everton last beat their city rivals in the league in 2006. In that period the sides have met eight times in all competitions, with Everton winning just once. Spread sellers of Liverpool’s supremacy can take some confidence that Everton have managed three draws in that time.

Sporting Index’s total goal minutes market is sure to spark interest amongst the spread betting public. There have been some intriguing totals in recent league matches between the two sides, including a 155 point make-up in the last game at Anfield. Sellers will point to the game before, where Fernando Torres scored the only goal, in the seventh minute.

Late goals have been a feature in some of the latest Merseyside derbies, which will be of interest to those punters looking at the ‘last match goal’ spread. The previous two league meetings have seen goals netted in the 80th and 87th minutes.
